Year 1 at Golders Hill - Curriculum
We follow the National Curriculum schemes of work for all subjects but these are adapted and differentiated to suit the needs of the children. In particular, we introduce the children to more formal mathematics and literacy tasks in preparation for 7+ entry.
Children follow an individual reading programme so that they can make progress at their own pace. Reading skills and grammar are taught actively and the children begin to learn weekly spellings. The children are set short homework tasks in addition to their home reading.
In the afternoons, we have a broader curriculum which aims to stimulate investigational and problem-solving skills. The children carry out experiments in science which brings their learning alive. They engage in the practical aspects of maths. In art sessions there is a careful balance between learning skills and being creative. The children start to learn French through songs and by using the interactive whiteboard. ICT is integrated into other curricular areas wherever possible as well as in dedicated sessions in the ICT suite.
